Getting there

Ngurah Rai takes direct flights from across Asia and Australia and one-stop from Europe and the Middle East. There are no domestic flights on the island — everything is road, with boats to the Gilis and Nusa Penida. Indonesia gives a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once for a further 30, with a visitor visa fee of IDR 500,000 and a passport needing six months' validity from arrival. Overstaying is fined IDR 1,000,000 per day and can mean detention, deportation and a re-entry ban.

Seychelles International on Mahé is the gateway, with Praslin and La Digue reached by domestic flight or ferry. Seychelles requires no visa, but an Electronic Travel Authorisation is mandatory and must be obtained BEFORE departure — every traveller, including anyone arriving by sea. A Visitor's Permit follows on arrival for up to three months, extendable in three-month blocks to twelve, against a return ticket, confirmed accommodation and sufficient funds.

The Seychelles travel authorisation is easy to miss precisely because there is no visa to prompt you.

The beaches

Seychelles wins this decisively and it is the reason to pay the difference.

Granite formations sitting on pale sand, public and walkable on La Digue and Praslin, are unlike anything in Indonesia. Bali's own beaches are not its strength, and the water people picture is off the Gilis and Nusa Penida, reached by boat.

When to go

Bali's dry season is April to September, extending into October in most of the country. The wet season runs October to March, most reliably November to March.

The Seychelles inner islands are dry December to April and wet June to October, and the difference between the two is mainly wind and rainfall rather than temperature.

April is the only month comfortably inside both. A July trip is Bali; a January trip is Seychelles.

Beyond the beach

Bali wins this as decisively as Seychelles wins the beaches. An interior, a road network and a culture encountered without seeking it.

Seychelles has a capital on Mahé and three islands to move between, which is a real pleasure but a much smaller menu.
