Fiji vs Hawaii

For Americans, Hawaii — twenty mainland cities have non-stop service into Honolulu, and Fiji means an international flight and then a boat or a small plane. For Australians and New Zealanders the calculation reverses, and Fiji is also substantially cheaper to eat in.

They share a best season, May to October, so dates will not decide this. Access and budget will.

Fiji

Fiji is an archipelago with Nadi as the arrival hub and island transfers by catamaran, small plane or helicopter. That spread of transfer options is the character of the place: the same country and the same boats serve backpacker islands and private ones.

Its dry winter, May to October, is simultaneously peak season, manta ray season and the best underwater visibility of the year, which is an unusually clean alignment.

Hawaii

Hawaii is six islands where the choice between them matters and moving between them is a flight — Honolulu to Maui is about thirty minutes, but with a second bag drop. On Maui and the neighbour islands a rental car is strongly recommended, and the tourism authority warns they are in high demand and should be booked ahead.

The defining feature of a Hawaiian beach day is shore aspect rather than island. The state's ocean safety service treats north, south, east and west shores as separate propositions, and the season flips which is safe.

Cost

Both sourced, and Fiji is markedly cheaper — with a caveat about the data.

Fiji, checked 9 July 2026: an inexpensive restaurant meal FJ$12. A three-course dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant FJ$90. A pint FJ$7. From 176 entries by 18 contributors over twelve months, so indicative rather than precise.

Honolulu, checked July 2026: an inexpensive meal $28. The same mid-range dinner for two $140. A pint $10.

No sourced accommodation rates for either, so no figure on a week. On food alone Hawaii is substantially the more expensive, and the Fijian figures point the same way even allowing for the thin dataset.

Getting there

Hawaii: Honolulu takes non-stop mainland service from Anchorage, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newark, New York, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle-Tacoma; Kahului adds five west-coast cities. Entry is US entry — ESTA or a visa.

Fiji: Nadi is the hub, then catamaran, small plane or helicopter onward. Visa-exempt nationalities get a visitor permit on arrival for up to four months, extendable by two more on application and payment — one of the more generous regimes in this directory, and worth knowing if you are considering a long stay.

The beaches

Hawaii's beaches are seasonal in a way Fiji's reputation does not suggest of it. In winter, north shores get consistent huge and dangerous swells and the state's ocean safety service says novice swimmers of any skill level should stay out of the water at those beaches, while south shores go flat-to-small. In summer the pattern inverts and south shores see large swells frequently. East shores are rough in both seasons from the trades.

For Fiji we have no sourced beach-level data yet, so the structural point is the one to hold: the beaches people travel there for are in the island groups, a catamaran or small plane beyond Nadi, and a lot of visitors never leave the main island's airport road.

In this directory: Fiji has 1 beach listed, 0 rated calm for swimming. Hawaii has 2, 1 calm.

In the water

Hawaii averages 23.3°C, rising to about 26.7°C in summer, and barely moves across the year — it is the waves that change drastically, not the temperature.

Fiji is warm year-round, with the dry winter months carrying the best underwater visibility and manta ray season together. We have no sourced month-by-month figures, so no temperature is claimed for it here.

For divers, Fiji has the clearer seasonal case. For surfers, Hawaii is the global reference and nothing here competes.

When to go

Both run May to October, so this is one of the few pairs where dates do not settle it.

Fiji's dry winter, May to October, is cooler, sunnier and less wet, averaging 23-24°C with most days 19-28°C. November to April is hot, wet and the tropical cyclone season.

Hawaii's best is also May to October — summer, averaging 29.4°C in the daytime at sea level against 25.6°C in winter. November to March is wettest, though rainfall is highly localised.

One asymmetry worth noting: Fiji's off-season carries named cyclone risk, Hawaii's carries surf and rain. Those are different kinds of gamble.

Beyond the beach

Hawaii has more of it — landscape and Hawaiian cultural sites across six islands, reachable with the rental car and an early start.

Fiji's is thinner and more water-centred. It would be dishonest to claim otherwise: people go to Fiji for the islands and the diving, not for what is inland.

Choose Fiji if

  • You are in Australia or New Zealand.
  • Eating out every day is a budget line — FJ$90 for a mid-range dinner for two against $140 in Honolulu.
  • You dive and want manta season with the year's best visibility.
  • A stay beyond a month appeals; the visitor permit runs to four months and extends.

Choose Hawaii if

  • You hold a US passport and want twenty non-stop options rather than one hub and a boat.
  • You surf at any level above beginner.
  • You want volcanic landscape and cultural sites as much as water.
  • Travelling between November and April, when Fiji is in its cyclone season and Hawaii is not.
