Fiji's case is the water and the island-hopping, and for anyone flying from Sydney or Auckland it is also simply much closer.

Fiji
Fiji is an archipelago where the beaches are a catamaran, small plane or helicopter beyond Nadi. Backpacker islands and private ones share the same transfer network.
Its dry winter, May to October, aligns peak season, manta ray season and the year's best underwater visibility.

Thailand runs two coasts on offset monsoons — the Andaman side in high season from November, the Gulf side roughly April to October — with Bangkok an hour's domestic flight from either.

Getting there
Nadi is the hub for international arrivals; island transfers are by catamaran, small plane or helicopter. Fiji issues visa-exempt nationalities a visitor permit on arrival valid up to four months, extendable by a further two on application and payment; non-exempt nationalities get a visitor visa for up to four months.
Bangkok is the international gateway, with Phuket taking some direct international flights. Domestic connections reach both coasts in about an hour, then ferries to the islands; overnight trains run south more slowly. Thailand's rules changed on 15 September 2026: the 60-day exemption was revoked, the 30-day tourism exemption was revised and expanded to 60 countries and territories, and a new 15-day scheme was introduced for two. Anyone already in the country under the old rules keeps their permitted stay. Older guidance is now wrong, so check your own nationality. All arrivals must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card, free on the official site.
