French Polynesia vs Thailand

Thailand for almost any brief that is not specifically the lagoon. It is cheaper by a wide sourced margin, far better connected, and has two coasts so some part of it is always in season.

French Polynesia wins on one thing and wins absolutely: the reef-ringed lagoon and the overwater bungalow over it. If that image is the holiday, Thailand does not substitute for it.

French Polynesia

French Polynesia is a hundred-plus islands across five archipelagos and an enormous span of ocean, all funnelling through one door — Faa'a on Tahiti is the only international gateway.

The archipelagos are not interchangeable. The Society Islands are strongest June to September. The Tuamotus suit diving year-round. The Marquesas are a year-round cultural destination rather than a lagoon one. Getting the choice wrong costs a domestic flight to correct.

Thailand

Thailand runs two coasts on offset monsoons — the Andaman side from November onwards, the Gulf side roughly April to October — and that single fact governs most trips here.

Bangkok is the gateway with domestic connections to both coasts in about an hour and ferries onward, plus overnight trains as a slower alternative. Behind the coast is a country with a serious cuisine at every price point.

French Polynesia is not covered by the cost-of-living dataset this directory uses, so there are no sourced figures for it and none are offered here. It prices in CFP francs, and anything beyond Tahiti — the territory's only international gateway — adds a domestic flight or ferry.

We also have no sourced accommodation rates for either, so this page puts no figure on a week. What it can say is that Thailand's sourced eating-out costs are among the lowest in this directory.

Getting there

French Polynesia: everything through Faa'a on Tahiti, then a domestic flight or ferry. French and EU citizens need no visa for French Polynesia; many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, with a valid passport required in every case.

Thailand: Bangkok is the gateway, with Phuket taking some direct international flights. Entry changed on 15 September 2026 — the 60-day exemption was revoked, the 30-day tourism exemption revised and expanded to 60 countries and territories, and a new 15-day scheme introduced for two. Older guidance is now wrong, so check your nationality. All arrivals submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card; the official site charges no fee.

The beaches

Different products. French Polynesia's draw is the lagoon rather than the sand — being in the water rather than walking beside it. Thailand's is coastline, on whichever side is in season.

French Polynesia's lagoon is 27-29°C with air at 20-30°C year-round, and humpback whales migrate through between August and November with guided excursions — a datable draw Thailand has no equivalent of.

Thailand is warm on both coasts with a twelve-month swimming season, though we have no sourced monthly figures for it.

When to go

French Polynesia's Season of Renewal runs May to October: dry, cooler at 21-27°C, lower humidity, and the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling. The Season of Abundance, November to April, is humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February — generally brief and followed by clear skies — and the lagoon is at its warmest then.

Thailand's Andaman coast takes heavy south-west monsoon storms April to October and is in high season from November; the Gulf coast's heaviest rain is September to December. There is no month when some Thai coast is out of season, but there are months when the coast you booked is.

May to October suits both. November to April points at Thailand's Andaman coast, and at French Polynesia only if you accept the humidity.

Beyond the beach

Thailand is a country to travel through; French Polynesia is an archipelago to island-hop. Both are legitimate holidays and they are not substitutes.

The Marquesas are worth naming as the exception on the Polynesian side — the tourism board describes them as a year-round cultural destination rather than a seasonal beach one.

Choose French Polynesia if

  • The lagoon is specifically what you are buying.
  • You want to dive the Tuamotus, which suit it year-round.
  • Humpbacks between August and November are on your list.
  • You are flying from the US west coast, New Zealand or South America, where the Pacific is yours rather than a detour.

Choose Thailand if

  • Cost is a factor at any level. We have sourced prices here and none for the Pacific.
  • You want cities, food and a rail network alongside the coast.
  • Your dates are fixed and inconvenient — two coasts cover the calendar.
  • You are flying from Europe, the Gulf, India or East Asia, where Bangkok is among the best connected airports you have.
