Cost

Honolulu, checked July 2026: an inexpensive restaurant meal $28; a three-course dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant $140; a pint of domestic draught $10.

For the Maldives we have no usable figure. Resort-island pricing is a closed market and diverges sharply from national averages, so a Malé restaurant price does not describe a resort meal and this page will not pretend otherwise.

Getting there

Honolulu takes non-stop mainland service from Anchorage, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newark, New York, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle-Tacoma. Kahului on Maui adds Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento. Hawaii is US entry: ESTA for Visa Waiver Program nationals, a US visa otherwise, and nothing additional for Hawaii itself.

Everything international routes through Velana at Malé. Speedboat is the norm for resorts near the airport; anything further out is a seaplane or one of the several daily domestic flights to twelve regional airports, then a speedboat. The Maldives gives a free 30-day visa on arrival to every nationality except Israeli passport holders, but the conditions are enforced: a machine-readable passport valid at least a month, a confirmed onward ticket, a prepaid booking at a registered resort or hotel, and either proof of funds — US$100 plus $50 per day — or that reservation. A Traveller Declaration must be submitted online within 96 hours before arrival.

The beaches

The state's ocean safety service is explicit about Hawaii: in winter, north shores get consistent huge and dangerous swells and novice swimmers of any skill level should stay out of the water at those beaches, while south shores go flat-to-small. In summer the pattern inverts and south shores see large swells frequently. East shores are rough in both seasons from the trades.

The Maldives asks none of that. On a good island the house reef starts at the sand and conditions are consistent across the stay. No sourced beach-level data for it here.

Hawaii has the range and the drama; the Maldives has the reliability.

In the water

Hawaii averages 23.3°C, rising to about 26.7°C in summer, and barely moves across the year — it is the waves that change drastically by season, not the water.

The Maldives sits around 28.3°C to 30°C across the year, warmest in April, and never drops below a comfortable swimming temperature.

The Maldives is several degrees warmer at every point of the year and has no cool season at all.

When to go

Hawaii is most reliable May to October — summer, averaging 29.4°C in the daytime at sea level against 25.6°C in winter, and the months when north-shore waves subside enough for general swimming. November to March is wettest, though rainfall is highly localised and the leeward coast is usually dry when the windward side is not.

The Maldives runs on the north-east monsoon, November to April, which is the generally sunny dry season; the meteorological service dates the true dry season more narrowly, January to March. The south-west monsoon, mid-May to November, is wetter and windier — but most days in it are still sunny, prices fall, and it is when Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll draws manta rays.

Close to opposed. November to April is the Maldives' dry season and Hawaii's wettest, surf-heavy stretch.

Beyond the beach

Hawaii has a great deal and the Maldives has a resort. That is not a criticism of either — it is what each is for.

Anyone who wants a country behind the beach should read the Maldivian model as a genuine limitation, and look at the guesthouse islands if it matters.
