Mauritius, unless the lagoon and the overwater villa over it is the specific thing you are buying — in which case Bora Bora and nothing else will do.
Mauritius is a country with non-stop flights from four continents, sourced prices, an interior and a capital. Bora Bora is one lagoon at the end of three connections, and it is the best version of that lagoon anywhere.

Mauritius
Mauritius is a single island small enough to cross in an afternoon — roughly an hour and a quarter east to west, about an hour and twenty north to south, fifty minutes from the airport to Port Louis. Everything is road, cars drive on the left, and foreign licences are accepted.
That means one base covers the whole island, and it means there is a great deal that is not beach within easy reach: an interior, a working capital, and a food culture drawing on India, China, France and Africa at once.
Bora Bora
Bora Bora is reached through Faa'a on Tahiti — French Polynesia's only international gateway — then a domestic flight, then a boat. Three legs after you leave home.
The tourism board names the Season of Renewal, May to October, as offering perfect conditions specifically for Bora Bora and the Tuamotus: cooler at 21-27°C with lower humidity. It is a single-purpose destination executed better than anywhere else, and it does not pretend to be anything broader.
Cost
Sourced on one side only.
Mauritius, checked August 2026: an inexpensive restaurant meal Rs300, range Rs150-600. A three-course dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant Rs2,000, range Rs1,200-4,000. A pint Rs100. Some upmarket restaurants add a 10-15% service charge.
French Polynesia is not in the cost dataset this directory uses, so there are no sourced figures for Bora Bora and none are offered. It prices in CFP francs, and the two onward legs from Tahiti are a cost with no Mauritian equivalent — Mauritius has one airport and a road network beyond it.
Getting there
The gap here is wide and structural.
Mauritius has non-stop service to and from London, Paris CDG daily, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Geneva, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Antananarivo, Saint-Denis, Kuala Lumpur and Perth, plus Dubai under a codeshare. There are no direct flights from the Americas. Entry is a tourist visa on arrival, up to 180 days cumulative in a calendar year, with an All in One travel form to complete before departure.
Bora Bora: Faa'a on Tahiti, then a domestic flight, then a boat. French and EU citizens need no visa; many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months.
The beaches
Mauritius' barrier reef ring keeps the water inside it flat on most of the coast on most days, which is the practical advantage. The counterweight is wind: kitesurfing season runs April to November, windiest in July and August, concentrated on the east and south coasts.
For Bora Bora we have no sourced beach-level data, so this page describes the lagoon rather than the sand. What is sourced is that May to October gives the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling while November to April gives the warmest water — a trade Mauritius does not make you weigh in the same way.
In this directory: Mauritius has 2 beaches listed, 2 rated calm for swimming. Bora Bora has 1, 1 calm.
In the water
Bora Bora's lagoon runs 27-29°C, warmest November to April, with air 20-30°C year-round. It is a narrow, warm, stable band.
Mauritius runs roughly 23.7°C to 28.5°C — warmest in March at about 28.5°C, coolest in August and September at about 23.7°C. Swimmable year-round at the main resort coasts, but with a real cool season that Bora Bora does not have.
If you are travelling in August and want the water warm, that is a genuine point for Bora Bora: Mauritius is at its annual coldest exactly then, and the difference is several degrees.
When to go
Both peak May to October, so dates rarely decide this pair.
Mauritius' winter, May to October, is drier and breezier at around 25°C with quieter beaches. Cyclone season runs November to 15 May — officially that wide, which catches out people planning a November trip.
Bora Bora's Season of Renewal is May to October. November to April is humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February, though they are generally brief and followed by clear skies, and the lagoon is warmest then.
The useful distinction is what the off-season means: for Mauritius it is a named cyclone window, for Bora Bora it is showers and humidity.

Beyond the beach
Mauritius wins this outright and it is the reason most people should pick it. An interior, a capital, four cuisines, and an island small enough that none of it is an expedition.
Bora Bora makes no claim here and does not need to. What it has instead is the onward network of the territory — the Tuamotus for diving year-round, the Marquesas as a year-round cultural destination — but those are separate trips, not day trips.
Choose Mauritius if
- You want a whole country rather than one lagoon, with a capital and an interior behind the beach.
- You are flying from Europe, the Gulf, India, Africa or Australia, where the non-stops are.
- You want to know what things cost before booking.
- You kitesurf and can travel April to November, when the trades are up on the east and south coasts.
Choose Bora Bora if
- The lagoon is the entire point of the trip and you already know no substitute exists.
- Warm water in August matters — 27-29°C against Mauritius at its annual coolest.
- You are coming from the US west coast, New Zealand or South America.
- You would rather spend three legs reaching one perfect place than an easy flight reaching a varied one.
