Mauritius, checked August 2026: an inexpensive restaurant meal Rs300, range Rs150-600. A three-course dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant Rs2,000, range Rs1,200-4,000. A pint of domestic draught Rs100. Some upmarket restaurants add a 10-15% service charge.

French Polynesia is not covered by the cost-of-living dataset this directory uses, so there are no sourced figures for Tahiti and this page does not offer any. What we can say without guessing: the territory prices in CFP francs, and reaching anywhere beyond Tahiti means a domestic flight or ferry on top.

Getting there

This is the clearest gap between them.

Mauritius has non-stop service to and from London, Paris CDG daily, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Geneva, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Antananarivo, Saint-Denis on Réunion, Kuala Lumpur and Perth, plus Dubai under a codeshare. There are no direct flights from the Americas. Entry is a tourist visa on arrival, up to 180 days cumulative in a calendar year, granted case by case, with an All in One travel form to complete before departure.

Tahiti is reached through Faa'a, French Polynesia's only international gateway. French and EU citizens need no visa; many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, with a valid passport required in every case.

The beaches

Mauritius' reef ring is the structural advantage: flat water inside it on most of the coast on most days. The counterweight is wind — kitesurfing season runs April to November with July and August windiest, mainly on the east and south coasts.

For Tahiti we are deliberately quiet. The tourism board's material does not give us a sourced characterisation of the island's own beaches, and the thing most often repeated about them is something we could not verify, so this page does not repeat it either. What is sourced is that the territory's lagoon water runs 27-29°C and is warmest November to April, while May to October gives the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling.

In the water

Mauritius runs roughly 23.7°C to 28.5°C across the year — warmest in March at about 28.5°C, coolest in August and September at about 23.7°C — and is swimmable year-round at the main resort coasts.

French Polynesia's lagoon runs 27-29°C, a narrower and warmer band, with air temperatures of 20-30°C year-round. Humpback whales migrate through August to November with guided excursions, which Mauritius has no equivalent of.

If the water being warm in August matters, that is a real point for Tahiti: Mauritius is at its coolest exactly then.

When to go

Both peak May to October, which makes this one of the few pairs in this directory where dates do not decide it.

Mauritius' winter, May to October, is drier and breezier at around 25°C with quieter beaches. Its cyclone season runs November to 15 May — officially that wide, not just January to March, which is worth knowing if you are looking at a November trip.

French Polynesia's Season of Renewal is May to October: dry, cooler at 21-27°C, lower humidity. The Season of Abundance, November to April, is humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February, though they are generally brief and the lagoon is warmest then.

Beyond the beach

Mauritius has the clear advantage and it is the main reason to pick it. A mountainous interior, Port Louis, four cuisines, and an island small enough that none of it is a committed expedition.

Tahiti's case is that it is the gateway to everything else in the territory — Moorea a short hop away, the Tuamotus for diving year-round, the Marquesas as a year-round cultural destination. As a base for onward travel it is unavoidable; as a standalone week it asks more of you.
