Thailand, on almost every practical axis. It is cheaper by a wide sourced margin, reachable from far more places, and has two coasts so some part of it is always in season.
Tahiti's case is narrow but real: it is the gateway to French Polynesia, and if the territory is where you are going then Tahiti is part of the trip whether or not you choose it.

Tahiti
Tahiti is the hub the rest of French Polynesia connects through. Faa'a is the territory's only international gateway, so every arrival in the country lands here — Moorea is a short hop or ferry, the other islands are domestic flights.
It carries the territory's administrative weight and most of its population. Most itineraries give it a night either side of somewhere else, and treating it as the destination is a minority choice.
Thailand
Thailand's defining feature is two coasts on offset monsoons. The Andaman side runs its high season from November onwards; the Gulf side is the one to pick roughly April to October.
Bangkok is the gateway, with domestic connections to both coasts in about an hour and ferries to the islands, plus overnight trains as a slower alternative. Behind the coast is a country with a serious cuisine at every price point.

French Polynesia is not covered by the cost dataset this directory uses, so there are no sourced figures for Tahiti and none are offered. It prices in CFP francs, and reaching anything beyond Tahiti adds a domestic flight or ferry.
Getting there
Tahiti: Faa'a is French Polynesia's only international gateway, so every trip to the territory passes through it. French and EU citizens need no visa; many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, with a valid passport required in all cases.
Thailand: Bangkok is the gateway, with Phuket taking some direct international flights. Entry changed on 15 September 2026 — the 60-day exemption was revoked, the 30-day tourism exemption revised and expanded to 60 countries and territories, and a 15-day scheme introduced for two. This is recent enough that older guidance is wrong; check your nationality. All arrivals submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card, free on the official site.
The beaches
We are deliberately quiet about Tahiti's own beaches. The tourism board's material gives us no sourced characterisation of them, and the claim most often repeated is one we could not verify, so this page does not repeat it.
What is sourced for French Polynesia is the lagoon: 27-29°C, warmest November to April, with May to October giving the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling.
For Thailand we have no sourced beach-level data yet either. The structural point stands: whichever coast is in season is calm and warm, and the other one is not.

French Polynesia's lagoon runs 27-29°C depending on season, warmest November to April, with air temperatures of 20-30°C year-round. May to October gives the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling.
Thailand is warm on both coasts with a twelve-month swimming season, though we have no sourced monthly figures for it.
When to go
Enough overlap that dates rarely decide this, unlike most pairs here.
French Polynesia's Season of Renewal is May to October — dry, cooler at 21-27°C, lower humidity, clearest water. The Season of Abundance, November to April, is humid with showers heaviest December to February, generally brief, and with the lagoon at its warmest.
Thailand's Andaman coast is in high season from November; the Gulf suits April to October. There is no month when some Thai coast is out of season.
So a May-to-October trip suits both, and Thailand also covers the months Polynesia does not.

Beyond the beach
Thailand is a country with cities, a cuisine and a rail network. Tahiti is an island that functions as an airport for an archipelago.
That said, Tahiti's onward network is genuinely strong: Moorea a short hop, the Tuamotus for year-round diving, the Marquesas as a year-round cultural destination. It is a hub rather than a destination, and it is an excellent hub.
Choose Tahiti if
- French Polynesia is the trip and the only question is how much time the arrival island gets.
- Moorea, the Tuamotus or the Marquesas are the real target.
- You hold a French or EU passport, where entry is a non-issue.
- Warm lagoon water between November and April is what you want, when Thailand's Andaman coast is also good but its Gulf coast is not.
Choose Thailand if
- Cost matters at all. We have sourced figures here and none for French Polynesia.
- You want a long trip with cities, food and travel between places.
- Your dates are fixed and awkward — two coasts mean something is always in season.
- You are flying from Europe, the Gulf, India or anywhere in Asia, where Bangkok is among the best-connected airports available to you.
