Getting there

Ngurah Rai takes direct flights from across Asia and Australia and one-stop from Europe and the Middle East. There are no domestic flights on the island — everything is road, with boats to the Gilis and Nusa Penida. Indonesia gives a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once for a further 30, with a visitor visa fee of IDR 500,000 and a passport needing six months' validity from arrival. Overstaying is fined IDR 1,000,000 per day and can mean detention, deportation and a re-entry ban.

Faa'a on Tahiti is the territory's only international gateway. Inter-island travel beyond it is by domestic flight or ferry. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity: French and EU citizens need no visa, and many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, with a valid passport required in every case.

The beaches

Bali's own beaches are not its strength and the water most people picture is off the Gilis and Nusa Penida, reached by boat.

Bora Bora's product is the lagoon rather than the sand — being in the water rather than walking beside it. No sourced beach-level data for either yet.

The Polynesian trade worth knowing: May to October gives the clearest water for diving and snorkelling, November to April gives the warmest.

When to go

Bali's dry season is April to September, extending into October in most of the country. The wet season runs October to March, most reliably November to March.

French Polynesia's Season of Renewal runs May to October: dry, cooler at 21-27°C, lower humidity, and the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling. The Season of Abundance, November to April, is humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February — generally brief and followed by clear skies — and the lagoon is at its warmest then.

May to October suits both. November to April is Bali's wet season and French Polynesia's humid one, so there is no month where one is clearly right and the other clearly wrong.

Beyond the beach

Bali has an interior and a culture you encounter without seeking it out. Bora Bora has a lagoon and a set of resorts on it.

The territory's wider network is the counter-argument — the Tuamotus for year-round diving, the Marquesas as a year-round cultural destination — but those are separate trips.
