Bali vs Thailand

Thailand, for most briefs. Two coasts on offset monsoons mean some part of it is always in season, the domestic network reaches both in about an hour, and the sourced food prices are in the same low bracket as Bali's.

Bali's case is that it is one island rather than a country — simpler, more concentrated, and direct from across Asia and Australia. For a first long-haul trip that simplicity is worth something.

Bali

Bali is a single road-connected island with no domestic flights, and boats to the Gilis and Nusa Penida. The whole trip happens within a few hours' drive, which is either reassuring or limiting depending on how long you are staying.

The south is dense and heavily developed. The quieter coasts are a real drive, and the traffic makes short distances long.

Thailand

Thailand is a country with two coasts on opposite monsoons and a domestic network that reaches both. Bangkok is the gateway, an hour's flight from either side, with ferries onward and overnight trains as a slower alternative.

That means a Thailand trip can contain cities, a north, and a coast, where a Bali trip contains Bali. Both are legitimate; they are different lengths of holiday.

Cost

Getting there

Ngurah Rai takes direct flights from across Asia and Australia and one-stop from Europe and the Middle East. There are no domestic flights on the island — everything is road, with boats to the Gilis and Nusa Penida. Indonesia gives a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once for a further 30, with a visitor visa fee of IDR 500,000 and a passport needing six months' validity from arrival. Overstaying is fined IDR 1,000,000 per day and can mean detention, deportation and a re-entry ban.

Bangkok is the international gateway, with Phuket taking some direct international flights. Domestic connections reach both coasts in about an hour, then ferries to the islands; overnight trains run south more slowly. Thailand's rules changed on 15 September 2026: the 60-day exemption was revoked, the 30-day tourism exemption was revised and expanded to 60 countries and territories, and a new 15-day scheme was introduced for two. Anyone already in the country under the old rules keeps their permitted stay. Older guidance is now wrong, so check your own nationality. All arrivals must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card, free on the official site.

The beaches

Neither has sourced beach-level data here yet, so the honest comparison is structural.

Bali's best water is off the Gilis and Nusa Penida — boat rides from the main island. Thailand's is on whichever coast is in season, reached by a domestic flight and a ferry.

The difference that matters: Thailand always has a working coast somewhere, and Bali has one wet season that applies to the whole island.

When to go

Bali's dry season is April to September, extending into October in most of the country. The wet season runs October to March, most reliably November to March.

Thailand's Andaman coast takes heavy south-west monsoon storms April to October and is in high season from November. The Gulf coast's heaviest rain is September to December. There is no month when some Thai coast is out of season, but there are months when the coast you booked is.

That is the strongest single argument for Thailand. Bali has one wet season covering the island; Thailand has a coast for every month.

Beyond the beach

Both are strong here, which is unusual — most pairs in this directory have one clear winner.

Bali's interior is concentrated and reachable without another flight. Thailand's is larger, further apart, and connected by trains and cheap domestic flights. For under two weeks Bali's compactness wins; beyond that Thailand's range does.

Choose Bali if

  • You are flying from Australia or East Asia, where Denpasar is direct.
  • You want one island and no internal flights.
  • Your dates fall between April and October.
  • Ten days or fewer, where a country would mean spending the trip in transit.

Choose Thailand if

  • Your dates are fixed in the northern winter, when Bali is reliably wet and the Andaman coast is at its best.
  • You want three weeks or more with cities and a rail network in them.
  • You are flying from Europe, the Gulf or India, where Bangkok is among the best-connected airports available.
  • Food is a primary reason for the trip rather than a bonus.
