French Polynesia is not covered by the cost-of-living dataset this directory uses, so there are no sourced figures for it and none are offered. It prices in CFP francs, and anything beyond Tahiti adds a domestic flight or ferry.

For the Maldives we have no usable figure. Resort-island pricing is a closed market and diverges sharply from national averages, so a Malé restaurant price does not describe a resort meal and this page will not pretend otherwise.

Neither can be priced here, which is itself the finding: both are closed or unlisted markets. The difference is that the Maldives has enough competing islands that prices move, and a guesthouse tier that genuinely undercuts the resorts.

Getting there

Faa'a on Tahiti is the territory's only international gateway. Inter-island travel beyond it is by domestic flight or ferry. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity: French and EU citizens need no visa, and many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, with a valid passport required in every case.

Everything international routes through Velana at Malé. Speedboat is the norm for resorts near the airport; anything further out is a seaplane or one of the several daily domestic flights to twelve regional airports, then a speedboat. The Maldives gives a free 30-day visa on arrival to every nationality except Israeli passport holders, but the conditions are enforced: a machine-readable passport valid at least a month, a confirmed onward ticket, a prepaid booking at a registered resort or hotel, and either proof of funds — US$100 plus $50 per day — or that reservation. A Traveller Declaration must be submitted online within 96 hours before arrival.

The Maldives' entry conditions are the stricter of the two on paper — a prepaid booking is effectively required — but that is exactly what anyone going to a resort island already has.

The beaches

Both are lagoon products rather than beach-walking ones, and neither has sourced beach-level data here yet.

The structural distinction: in the Maldives a good island puts the house reef at the sand, so snorkelling is a matter of walking into the water. Bora Bora's lagoon is larger and shallower and more of the activity is boat-based across it.

French Polynesia's lagoon runs 27-29°C depending on season, warmest November to April, with air temperatures of 20-30°C year-round.

The Maldives sits around 28.3°C to 30°C across the year, warmest in April, and never drops below a comfortable swimming temperature.

The Maldives is the warmer and more constant of the two. Bora Bora's lagoon is a degree or two cooler at its low and has a genuine seasonal swing, with the clearest water May to October and the warmest November to April.

When to go

French Polynesia's Season of Renewal runs May to October: dry, cooler at 21-27°C, lower humidity, and the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling. The Season of Abundance, November to April, is humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February — generally brief and followed by clear skies — and the lagoon is at its warmest then.

The Maldives runs on the north-east monsoon, November to April, which is the generally sunny dry season; the meteorological service dates the true dry season more narrowly, January to March. The south-west monsoon, mid-May to November, is wetter and windier — but most days in it are still sunny, prices fall, and it is when Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll draws manta rays.

The Maldives' dry season and French Polynesia's are almost exactly opposed. November to April points at the Maldives; May to October at Bora Bora. That is unusually clean for two destinations selling the same picture.

Beyond the beach

Neither, and both are honest about it. The relevant difference is what is one leg away: from Bora Bora, the Tuamotus for year-round diving and the Marquesas as a year-round cultural destination. From a Maldivian resort island, the guesthouse islands, where the country is actually visible.
