Bora Bora

Bora Bora sits at the end of three legs: Faa'a on Tahiti, a domestic flight, then a boat. The tourism board names May to October as offering perfect conditions specifically for it.

It is a single lagoon executed better than anywhere else, and it does not pretend to be a broader destination.

Seychelles

Seychelles is three main islands inside one week — Mahé with the gateway and capital, Praslin and La Digue by domestic flight or ferry.

The granitic inner islands are the draw: weathered boulders on pale sand, public and walkable. The seasonal difference is mainly wind and rainfall rather than temperature.

Getting there

Seychelles International on Mahé is the gateway, with Praslin and La Digue reached by domestic flight or ferry. Seychelles requires no visa, but an Electronic Travel Authorisation is mandatory and must be obtained BEFORE departure — every traveller, including anyone arriving by sea. A Visitor's Permit follows on arrival for up to three months, extendable in three-month blocks to twelve, against a return ticket, confirmed accommodation and sufficient funds.

Faa'a on Tahiti is the territory's only international gateway. Inter-island travel beyond it is by domestic flight or ferry. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity: French and EU citizens need no visa, and many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, with a valid passport required in every case.

The Seychelles travel authorisation catches people out because there is no visa to remind them it exists.

Granite formations on pale sand, publicly accessible across three islands, are specific and unlike anything in the Pacific. Bora Bora's product is the lagoon rather than the sand — being in the water rather than walking beside it.

For divers, French Polynesia has the clearer seasonal case — May to October gives the clearest conditions — and humpbacks pass through August to November with guided excursions.

When to go

The Seychelles inner islands are dry December to April and wet June to October, and the difference between the two is mainly wind and rainfall rather than temperature.

French Polynesia's Season of Renewal runs May to October: dry, cooler at 21-27°C, lower humidity, and the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling. The Season of Abundance, November to April, is humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February — generally brief and followed by clear skies — and the lagoon is at its warmest then.

Almost no overlap. A February trip is Seychelles; a July trip is Bora Bora.
