Getting there

Ngurah Rai takes direct flights from across Asia and Australia and one-stop from Europe and the Middle East. There are no domestic flights on the island — everything is road, with boats to the Gilis and Nusa Penida. Indonesia gives a 30-day visa on arrival, extendable once for a further 30, with a visitor visa fee of IDR 500,000 and a passport needing six months' validity from arrival. Overstaying is fined IDR 1,000,000 per day and can mean detention, deportation and a re-entry ban.

Honolulu takes non-stop mainland service from Anchorage, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newark, New York, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle-Tacoma. Kahului on Maui adds Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento. Hawaii is US entry: ESTA for Visa Waiver Program nationals, a US visa otherwise, and nothing additional for Hawaii itself.

The beaches

Hawaii's range of sand and landscape is wider; its beaches are also the more conditional.

The state's ocean safety service is explicit: in winter, north shores get consistent huge and dangerous swells and novice swimmers of any skill level should stay out of the water at those beaches, while south shores go flat-to-small. In summer the pattern inverts and south shores see large swells frequently. East shores are rough in both seasons from the trades.

Bali's own beaches are not its strength, and the water people picture is off the Gilis and Nusa Penida — boat rides rather than drives. No sourced beach-level data for Bali yet.

Hawaii averages 23.3°C, rising to about 26.7°C in summer, and barely moves across the year — it is the waves that change drastically by season, not the water.

Bali is warm and swimmable year-round but has no sourced monthly figures here. Hawaii's is the cooler of the two and its constancy is the notable thing — the seasonal variable there is waves, not temperature.

When to go

Bali's dry season is April to September, extending into October in most of the country. The wet season runs October to March, most reliably November to March.

Hawaii is most reliable May to October — summer, averaging 29.4°C in the daytime at sea level against 25.6°C in winter, and the months when north-shore waves subside enough for general swimming. November to March is wettest, though rainfall is highly localised and the leeward coast is usually dry when the windward side is not.

May to October suits both, so dates rarely decide this pair.

Beyond the beach

Bali has more of it and it is more accessible — a road-connected interior and a culture encountered rather than sought.
