Matira

Bora Bora is a lagoon with a mountain in the middle of it, and almost all of the sand is spoken for. The overwater bungalows are out on the motu — the islets on the barrier reef — and the beach in front of each one belongs to the resort behind it.

Matira is the exception and the only exception. It runs down the southern point of the main island, it is public, and it is the one place on Bora Bora you can walk onto the sand without being a guest of something.

The water is the lagoon rather than the ocean, so it is shallow, flat and warm for a long way out. That is what Bora Bora is selling; Matira is where you can have it for nothing.
