Natadola is the public beach Fiji is short of: a deep curve of white sand on the south-west corner of Viti Levu, open to the ocean rather than shut behind a fringing reef the way most of this coast is.
Being open is the whole character of it. The water is properly swimmable at any tide, which is unusual here, and there is enough push to learn to surf on. It also means there is nothing between you and the swell, so on a big day it is a beach to walk rather than swim.
