Both are built for the American market and the honest split is coastal: the Bahamas from the east, Hawaii from the west and centre. Honolulu has non-stop service from twenty mainland cities, but from Miami or New York the Bahamas is barely a journey at all.
On the destinations themselves, Hawaii has far more range and far more conditional beaches; the Bahamas has easier water and a shorter trip.

Hawaii
Hawaii is six islands, and moving between them is a flight — Honolulu to Maui is about thirty minutes, with a second bag drop. A rental car is strongly recommended on Maui and the neighbour islands and should be booked ahead.
Shore aspect governs the beach day. The state's ocean safety service treats north, south, east and west shores as separate propositions, and the season flips which is safe.
Bahamas
The Bahamas is a busy gateway at Nassau with a long tail of quiet Out Islands reached by domestic carriers. Spring break, late February to mid-April, is the busiest stretch.
Very large shallow banks are what give the water its colour, across distances no reef could cover. Most visitors never make the Out Island hop, which is why reputation and reality diverge.

Getting there
Honolulu takes non-stop mainland service from Anchorage, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newark, New York, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle-Tacoma. Kahului on Maui adds Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento. Hawaii is US entry: ESTA for Visa Waiver Program nationals, a US visa otherwise, and nothing additional for Hawaii itself.
Nassau is the principal gateway; several Out Islands have their own airports and some take direct US service in season. The Bahamas needs a passport valid six months, a return or onward ticket, hotel confirmation or an address, and proof of funds. Visa requirements track the period of leave to land, so anyone staying beyond 90 days should check their nationality. US citizens entering as bona fide visitors may stay up to eight months without a visa; Canadian landed immigrants holding Form 1000 may enter visa-free for up to 30 days.
The beaches
Hawaii's range is far wider and its beaches are far more conditional.
The state's ocean safety service is explicit: in winter, north shores get consistent huge and dangerous swells and novice swimmers of any skill level should stay out of the water there, while south shores go flat-to-small. In summer the pattern inverts and south shores see large swells frequently. East shores are rough in both seasons.
The Bahamas asks none of that. Its water is shallow and calm across enormous areas, with no sourced beach-level data here yet.

Hawaii averages 23.3°C, rising to about 26.7°C in summer, and barely moves across the year — it is the waves that change drastically by season, not the water.
The Bahamas is warm most of the year and cooler in winter than the equatorial destinations here; it sits well north of them. No sourced monthly figures, so no numbers claimed.
When to go
Hawaii is most reliable May to October — summer, averaging 29.4°C in the daytime at sea level against 25.6°C in winter, and the months when north-shore waves subside enough for general swimming. November to March is wettest, though rainfall is highly localised and the leeward coast is usually dry when the windward side is not.
The Bahamas is best December through May, outside a hurricane season that runs June through November. Many Bahamian hotels carry hurricane cancellation policies giving a full refund if a storm disrupts the trip.
