The widest gap of any pair involving Hawaii, and both sides are sourced.

We have no sourced accommodation rates for either, so this page will not tell you what a week costs. On food alone the difference compounds daily, and over three weeks it is the dominant line. The crossover is the airfare, which we also cannot source — run that first.

Getting there

Hawaii: Honolulu takes non-stop mainland service from Anchorage, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Newark, New York, Oakland, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle-Tacoma. Kahului on Maui adds Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento. Entry is US entry: ESTA for Visa Waiver nationals, a visa otherwise.

Thailand: Bangkok is the international gateway, with Phuket taking some direct international flights. Entry rules changed on 15 September 2026 — the 60-day exemption was revoked, the 30-day tourism exemption revised and expanded to 60 countries and territories, and a new 15-day scheme introduced for two. Anyone already in the country under the old rules keeps their permitted stay. Check your own nationality before booking. All arrivals must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card; the official site charges no fee.

The beaches

Hawaii's advantage is variety of landscape; its disadvantage is that a meaningful share of its beaches are seasonal. The state's ocean safety service is explicit: in winter, north shores get consistent huge and dangerous swells and novice swimmers of any skill level should stay out of the water there, while south shores go flat-to-small. In summer the pattern inverts and south shores see large swells frequently. East shores are rough in both seasons from the trades.

Thailand's advantage is that the correct coast for the season is calm and warm, and its disadvantage is that you have to book the correct coast. We have no sourced beach-level data for Thailand yet.

If you want to swim daily without reading a forecast, that is Thailand on the right coast. If you want coastline that looks like nowhere else, that is Hawaii.

In the water

Hawaii averages 23.3°C, rising to about 26.7°C in summer, and it barely moves — the ocean temperature is near-constant year-round and it is the waves that change drastically.

Thailand is warm on both coasts with a twelve-month swimming season, though we have no sourced monthly figures for it.

When to go

Close to counter-seasonal, which often settles it.

Hawaii is most reliable May to October — summer, averaging 29.4°C in the daytime at sea level against 25.6°C in winter, and the months when north-shore waves subside enough for general swimming. November to March is wettest, though rainfall is highly localised and the leeward coast is usually dry when the windward side is not.

Thailand's Andaman coast is in high season from November and takes heavy monsoon storms April to October; the Gulf's heaviest rain is September to December.

For fixed dates in December or January both work and Thailand is dramatically cheaper. For fixed dates in September, Hawaii — or Thailand's Gulf coast, which the Tourism Authority names specifically for that month.

Beyond the beach

Thailand wins this outright and it is why a fortnight there rarely drags: a cuisine at every price point, Bangkok, the north, an overnight train network, and enough that a wet week changes the trip rather than ruining it.

Hawaii's equivalent is landscape and Hawaiian cultural sites, spread across six islands and mostly requiring the rental car and an early start. A smaller menu, and a more logistical one.
