Kahului on Maui adds Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento. Hawaii is US entry: ESTA for Visa Waiver Program nationals, a US visa otherwise, and nothing additional for Hawaii itself.

Faa'a on Tahiti is the territory's only international gateway. Inter-island travel beyond it is by domestic flight or ferry. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity: French and EU citizens need no visa, and many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, with a valid passport required in every case.

The beaches

The state's ocean safety service is explicit about Hawaii: in winter, north shores get consistent huge and dangerous swells and novice swimmers of any skill level should stay out of the water at those beaches, while south shores go flat-to-small. In summer the pattern inverts and south shores see large swells frequently. East shores are rough in both seasons from the trades.

Bora Bora's product is the lagoon rather than the sand — being in the water rather than choosing between beaches. No sourced beach-level data for it here.

Hawaii averages 23.3°C, rising to about 26.7°C in summer, and barely moves across the year — it is the waves that change drastically by season, not the water.

French Polynesia's lagoon runs 27-29°C depending on season, warmest November to April, with air temperatures of 20-30°C year-round.

Bora Bora's water is meaningfully warmer at every point of the year. Hawaii's compensation is that its temperature barely moves — what changes there is the surf.

When to go

Hawaii is most reliable May to October — summer, averaging 29.4°C in the daytime at sea level against 25.6°C in winter, and the months when north-shore waves subside enough for general swimming. November to March is wettest, though rainfall is highly localised and the leeward coast is usually dry when the windward side is not.

French Polynesia's Season of Renewal runs May to October: dry, cooler at 21-27°C, lower humidity, and the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling. The Season of Abundance, November to April, is humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February — generally brief and followed by clear skies — and the lagoon is at its warmest then.

May to October suits both almost exactly, so this pair is decided on purpose rather than timing.
