French Polynesia is not covered by the cost-of-living dataset this directory uses, so there are no sourced figures for Bora Bora. It prices in CFP francs, and the two onward legs from Tahiti are a cost the Bahamas' domestic hops do not directly compare to.

The Bahamas is already one of the most expensive places to eat in this directory. Read that as the floor of this comparison rather than the ceiling.

Getting there

Bahamas: Nassau as principal gateway, several Out Islands with their own airports and some direct US service in season. Entry needs a passport valid six months, a return or onward ticket, hotel confirmation or an address, and proof of funds. Visa requirements track the period of leave to land; anyone staying beyond 90 days should check their nationality. US citizens entering as bona fide visitors may stay up to eight months without a visa.

Bora Bora: via Faa'a on Tahiti, the territory's only international gateway, then a domestic flight and a boat. French and EU citizens need no visa; many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, passport required in all cases.

The beaches

Two different products rather than two versions of one.

The Bahamas' shallow banks give enormous stretches of pale water, and the quiet sand is in the Out Islands, one domestic flight beyond Nassau. A great many visitors never make that hop, which is why the reputation and the reality diverge.

Bora Bora is a single lagoon, and the experience is being in it rather than walking beside it. We have no sourced beach-level data for either island yet, so this page describes the shape of the difference and not the sand.

In the water

Bora Bora's lagoon runs 27-29°C depending on season and is warmest November to April, with air temperatures of 20-30°C year-round. May to October gives the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling, so there is a genuine trade between warm water and clear water.

The Bahamas is warm for most of the year and cooler in winter than the equatorial destinations in this set — it sits well north of them. We do not have sourced month-by-month figures, so no numbers are claimed here, but the seasonal swing is real in a way Bora Bora's is not.

When to go

Almost perfectly opposed, which usually settles it.

The Bahamas is best December through May. Hurricane season runs June through November, and many Bahamian hotels carry cancellation policies giving a full refund if a storm disrupts the trip.

Bora Bora is at its best May to October, the Season of Renewal. November to April is the Season of Abundance: humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February, generally brief and followed by clear skies, and with the lagoon at its warmest.

May is the only month that suits both well.
