Bukit Peninsula

The Bukit is the limestone plateau hanging off the south end of Bali, and it is a different island from the one most people picture. There is no gentle shelving coast here: the plateau ends in cliffs, and the beaches are pockets at the bottom of them, reached down steps or through a cleft in the rock.

That geography is also why the surf is what it is. Swell arriving from the Indian Ocean meets reef rather than sand, and the breaks along this coast — Padang Padang among them — are the reason the Bukit developed at all.

It is close to the airport and it does not feel close to anything. Both beaches here are a walk down from a car park at the top, which is the practical thing to know: everything you carry down, you carry back up.
