Bahamas vs Thailand

Where you live decides this. The Bahamas is built around access from North America; Thailand is one of the best-connected countries in Asia and a long way from the Americas.

On cost they are at opposite ends of this directory: an inexpensive meal is $48.75 in the Bahamas and ฿100 in Thailand. If budget is doing any work at all in your decision, that gap will dominate it.

Bahamas

The Bahamas is an archipelago with Nassau as the principal gateway and a long tail of quieter Out Islands reached by domestic carriers, several with their own airports and some with direct US service in season.

Spring break, late February to mid-April, is the busiest stretch. The gap between Nassau and the Out Islands is the main thing to understand — most visitors never make that second hop.

Thailand

Thailand runs two coasts on offset monsoons: the Andaman side in high season from November, the Gulf side roughly April to October. Bangkok connects to both in about an hour, with ferries onward.

Behind the coast is a large country with a serious cuisine at every price point, which is what makes three weeks there feel short.

Cost

Bahamas, checked 7 September 2026: an inexpensive restaurant meal $48.75; a three-course dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant $165; a pint of domestic draught $5. The Bahamian dollar is pegged to and interchangeable with the US dollar.

Thailand, checked 19 September 2026: an inexpensive restaurant meal ฿100, range ฿50-200; a three-course dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant ฿900, range ฿600-2,500; a pint of domestic draught ฿70.

An inexpensive meal in the Bahamas costs roughly what a mid-range dinner for two costs in Thailand. Over a fortnight of eating out that is not a detail, it is the budget.

Getting there

Nassau is the principal gateway; several Out Islands have their own airports and some take direct US service in season. The Bahamas needs a passport valid six months, a return or onward ticket, hotel confirmation or an address, and proof of funds. Visa requirements track the period of leave to land, so anyone staying beyond 90 days should check their nationality. US citizens entering as bona fide visitors may stay up to eight months without a visa; Canadian landed immigrants holding Form 1000 may enter visa-free for up to 30 days.

Bangkok is the international gateway, with Phuket taking some direct international flights. Domestic connections reach both coasts in about an hour, then ferries to the islands; overnight trains run south more slowly. Thailand's rules changed on 15 September 2026: the 60-day exemption was revoked, the 30-day tourism exemption was revised and expanded to 60 countries and territories, and a new 15-day scheme was introduced for two. Anyone already in the country under the old rules keeps their permitted stay. Older guidance is now wrong, so check your own nationality. All arrivals must submit a Thailand Digital Arrival Card, free on the official site.

The beaches

No sourced beach-level data for either yet, so the useful comparison is how you reach them.

In the Bahamas the quiet sand is in the Out Islands, a domestic flight beyond Nassau, over very shallow banks that give the water its colour across large distances. In Thailand it is a domestic flight and a ferry to whichever coast is in season, with more dramatic limestone scenery and considerably more company.

In this directory: Bahamas has 1 beach listed, 0 rated calm for swimming. Thailand has 2, 2 calm.

When to go

The Bahamas is best December through May, outside a hurricane season that runs June through November. Many Bahamian hotels carry hurricane cancellation policies giving a full refund if a storm disrupts the trip.

Thailand's Andaman coast takes heavy south-west monsoon storms April to October and is in high season from November. The Gulf coast's heaviest rain is September to December. There is no month when some Thai coast is out of season, but there are months when the coast you booked is.

December through May works for both — the Bahamas outside hurricane season and Thailand's Andaman coast at its best. That overlap is wider than most pairs here.

Beyond the beach

Thailand wins this comfortably: cities, a cuisine, a rail network, and enough going on that a wet week changes the trip rather than ending it.

The Bahamas is concentrated on the water and the islands, with Nassau as the developed end and everything else quiet by design.

Choose Bahamas if

  • You are in North America, where this is a short hop.
  • You want a week rather than a month — this works at that length and Thailand does not really.
  • You hold a US passport and the eight-month visa-free allowance is useful.
  • Very shallow, very pale water across large distances is the specific thing you want.

Choose Thailand if

  • Budget matters at all. The sourced gap is roughly an order of magnitude on food.
  • You are flying from Europe, the Gulf, India or anywhere in Asia.
  • You want three weeks with cities and a country in them.
  • Food is a reason for the trip rather than a cost to manage.
