Almost entirely a question of where you live. The Bahamas is built around access from North America — Nassau is the principal gateway and several Out Islands take direct US service in season. Bali is direct from across Asia and Australia and one stop from Europe.
On cost they are not close. Bali is among the cheapest destinations in this directory and the Bahamas among the most expensive, and the sourced restaurant figures show it plainly.
| Measure | Best months | Daily budget | Currency | Language | Plugs | Beaches listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bali | April – October | Budget | IDR | Indonesian, Balinese | Type C / F, 230V | 2 |
| Bahamas | December – May | Upper | BSD (USD accepted at par) | English | Type A / B, 120V | 1 |
Bali
Bali is a single island with no domestic flights — everything is road, and boats reach the Gili islands and Nusa Penida. That makes where you base yourself the main planning decision, because correcting it means a drive rather than a hop.
It is also a place with a great deal behind the coast, which is why people stay three weeks rather than one.
Bahamas
The Bahamas is an archipelago with Nassau as the principal gateway and the Out Islands reached by domestic carriers — several with their own airports and some with direct US service in season.
That structure gives it two quite different holidays: the developed, easily-reached end, and the Out Islands, which take a second flight and reward it. Spring break, late February to mid-April, is the busiest stretch of the year and worth avoiding or seeking out deliberately.
Cost
The widest cost gap on this page, and both sides are sourced.
Indonesia, checked 19 September 2026: an inexpensive restaurant meal Rp30,000. A three-course dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant Rp210,000. A pint Rp40,000. National figures — Bali's tourist areas run above the national average.
Bahamas, checked 7 September 2026: an inexpensive restaurant meal $48.75. The same mid-range dinner for two $165. A pint $5.
An inexpensive meal in the Bahamas costs more than a mid-range dinner for two in Indonesia. That is not a rounding difference, and over a fortnight of eating out it is the dominant line in the budget. We have no sourced accommodation rates for either, so this page puts no figure on a week.
Getting there
Bali: Ngurah Rai, direct from across Asia and Australia, one stop from Europe and the Middle East. Visa on arrival 30 days, extendable once for 30 more; passport valid six months from arrival; visitor visa fee IDR 500,000. Overstay penalties are severe — IDR 1,000,000 per day, with detention, deportation and a re-entry ban possible.
Bahamas: Nassau is the principal gateway; several Out Islands have their own airports. Entry needs a passport with six months' validity, a return or onward ticket, hotel confirmation or an address, and proof of funds. Visa rules track the period of leave to land — anyone planning more than 90 days should check their own nationality. US citizens entering as bona fide visitors may stay up to eight months without a visa; Canadian landed immigrants holding Form 1000 may enter visa-free for up to 30 days.
The beaches
We have no sourced beach-level data for either yet, so this section stays structural rather than descriptive.
The shape of the difference is access. In Bali the water most people picture is off the Gilis and Nusa Penida — boat rides, not drives. In the Bahamas the equivalent is the Out Islands, reached by a domestic flight. In both cases the best of it is one leg beyond where you land, and in both cases a lot of visitors never take that leg.
In this directory: Bali has 2 beaches listed, 0 rated calm for swimming. Bahamas has 1, 0 calm.
When to go
These are close to counter-seasonal and the overlap is narrow.
Bali's dry season is April to September, extending into October. Wet season October to March, most reliably November to March.
The Bahamas is best December through May, outside hurricane season, which runs June through November. Many Bahamian hotels carry hurricane cancellation policies giving a full refund if a storm disrupts the trip — a reasonable safety net if you are travelling in the window anyway.
April and May suit both. A July trip means Bali; a January trip means the Bahamas.

Beyond the beach
Bali is the clear winner on this axis and it is the standard reason people choose it: an interior, a road network that reaches it, and enough going on that a wet week changes the trip rather than ruining it.
The Bahamas is more concentrated on the water and the islands themselves. Nassau has the developed end; the Out Islands are quiet by design.
Choose Bali if
- Budget is the binding constraint. A mid-range dinner for two is Rp210,000 against $165.
- You are flying from Asia, Australia or Europe.
- Your dates fall between April and October.
- You want somewhere with a large interior and a long trip's worth of things that are not beaches.
Choose Bahamas if
- You are in North America, where Nassau is the principal gateway and some Out Islands take direct US service.
- You are travelling December through May, outside hurricane season.
- You hold a US passport and value that bona fide visitors may stay up to eight months without a visa.
- A short trip suits you — this is the one of the two that works well in under a week.
