Tahiti vs Maldives

The Maldives, unless French Polynesia is the trip. The Maldives is reachable from Europe, the Gulf and Asia, has a market of competing islands, and delivers reef at the sand. Tahiti is the arrival island of a territory you would be going to for somewhere else.

Their dry seasons are also opposed — the Maldives November to April, French Polynesia May to October — which often settles it.

Tahiti

Tahiti is the hub the rest of French Polynesia connects through — Faa'a is the territory's only international gateway. Moorea is a short hop or ferry, other islands are domestic flights.

Most itineraries give it a night at each end of somewhere else rather than a week of their own.

Maldives

The Maldives is a resort-island model at national scale: dozens of islands across twenty-six atolls, speedboat near Malé, seaplane or domestic flight plus speedboat further out.

That scale gives it a real market — islands competing on house reef, transfer time and price — plus guesthouse islands as a much cheaper tier.

Cost

French Polynesia is not covered by the cost-of-living dataset this directory uses, so there are no sourced figures for it and none are offered. It prices in CFP francs, and anything beyond Tahiti adds a domestic flight or ferry.

For the Maldives we have no usable figure. Resort-island pricing is a closed market and diverges sharply from national averages, so a Malé restaurant price does not describe a resort meal and this page will not pretend otherwise.

Neither is priceable here. The difference is that the Maldives has enough competing islands and a guesthouse tier that prices move at all.

Getting there

Faa'a on Tahiti is the territory's only international gateway. Inter-island travel beyond it is by domestic flight or ferry. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity: French and EU citizens need no visa, and many other nationalities are exempt for tourist stays under three months, with a valid passport required in every case.

Everything international routes through Velana at Malé. Speedboat is the norm for resorts near the airport; anything further out is a seaplane or one of the several daily domestic flights to twelve regional airports, then a speedboat. The Maldives gives a free 30-day visa on arrival to every nationality except Israeli passport holders, but the conditions are enforced: a machine-readable passport valid at least a month, a confirmed onward ticket, a prepaid booking at a registered resort or hotel, and either proof of funds — US$100 plus $50 per day — or that reservation. A Traveller Declaration must be submitted online within 96 hours before arrival.

The beaches

On Tahiti's own beaches this page stays quiet. There is no sourced characterisation of them here, and the claim most often repeated about them is one we could not verify. What is sourced for the territory is the lagoon: 27-29°C, warmest November to April, with May to October giving the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling.

On a good Maldivian island the house reef starts at the sand, which is the single most concrete difference between them. No sourced beach-level data for either here.

In this directory: Tahiti has 2 beaches listed, 1 rated calm for swimming. Maldives has 10, 10 calm.

In the water

French Polynesia's lagoon runs 27-29°C depending on season, warmest November to April, with air temperatures of 20-30°C year-round.

The Maldives sits around 28.3°C to 30°C across the year, warmest in April, and never drops below a comfortable swimming temperature.

The Maldives is warmer at its coolest and has no seasonal swing at all. French Polynesia trades clearest water May to October against warmest November to April, and adds humpbacks August to November.

When to go

French Polynesia's Season of Renewal runs May to October: dry, cooler at 21-27°C, lower humidity, and the clearest conditions for diving and snorkelling. The Season of Abundance, November to April, is humid with tropical showers heaviest December to February — generally brief and followed by clear skies — and the lagoon is at its warmest then.

The Maldives runs on the north-east monsoon, November to April, which is the generally sunny dry season; the meteorological service dates the true dry season more narrowly, January to March. The south-west monsoon, mid-May to November, is wetter and windier — but most days in it are still sunny, prices fall, and it is when Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll draws manta rays.

Cleanly opposed, which makes scheduling straightforward: pick whichever dry season matches your dates.

Beyond the beach

Tahiti's argument is the territory's onward network — Moorea, the Tuamotus, the Marquesas.

A Maldives resort island has what the resort has; the guesthouse islands are where anything else is. Neither is chosen for what is inland.

Choose Tahiti if

  • French Polynesia is the destination and this is the gateway.
  • Your dates fall between May and October.
  • You dive the passes, or want humpbacks between August and November.
  • You hold a French or EU passport.

Choose Maldives if

  • You are flying from Europe, the Gulf, India or East Asia.
  • Your dates fall between November and April.
  • You want to compare islands on reef, transfer and price before booking.
  • Warm water with no cool season matters — 28.3°C to 30°C year-round.
